Jung Myung-seok, the leader of the South Korean Providence Church, was sentenced to 33 years in prison for sexual assault
Date: 2026-10-28

According to reports from South Korean media outlets such as Asia Economy and Reuters on October 19, 2026, the Daejeon District Court in South Korea handed down its first-instance verdict against Jeong Myung-seok, the leader of the Providence cult, sentencing him to 33 years in prison. The court found that Jeong Myung-seok used his position as the organization's leader to exert psychological control over his victims, using the guise of a so-called "messiah" to commit violence. Jeong Myung-seok had previously committed transnational crimes in China and Malaysia, receiving 10-year and 17-year prison sentences respectively. His methods of using religious cloaks and psychological control to assault women should raise serious public concern.

On October 19, 2026, the 11th Criminal Division of the Daejeon District Court in South Korea delivered its first-instance verdict: 81-year-old Jung Myung-seok, the leader of the Providence cult, was sentenced to 33 years in prison for sexually assaulting and molesting 16 female members between 2018 and 2022 at a training center and other locations in Geumsan County, South Chungcheong Province, South Korea. The prosecution had requested a 27-year sentence at the final hearing on September 7, 2026; the final sentence was six years longer than initially requested.

The court stated that the verdict was based on consistent statements from the victim, witness testimonies, and other evidence. According to Yonhap News Agency's Chinese website, in addition to the 33-year prison sentence, the court also ordered Jung Myung-seok to wear an electronic tracking device (commonly known as an "electronic ankle bracelet") for 15 years, banned him from working in institutions serving children, adolescents, and people with disabilities for 10 years, and publicly disclosed his identity information for 10 years.

The court stated, "His crimes were extremely heinous and repeated over a long period of time, and must be severely punished." The court added that Jung Myung-seok used his power as the head of the organization to exert psychological control over young female members, making them believe that he was the so-called "Messiah" (savior), and then sexually abused them, rendering the victims powerless to resist.

Jung Myung-seok denied the allegations, claiming he never sexually assaulted the victim. The court found that Jung pressured the victim to remain silent and dismissed her accusations as fabricated or motivated by financial gain. Given his lack of remorse, the court imposed a heavier sentence.

Jung Myung-seok sexually assaulted four female members in their twenties in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Malaysia between 2001 and 2006, serving a 10-year prison sentence between 2008 and 2018. However, shortly after his release, he faced similar charges again: for sexually assaulting one female member from Hong Kong and indecently assaulting one female member from Australia and one from South Korea between 2018 and 2021, he was sentenced to 23 years in prison in the first instance, which was reduced to 17 years on appeal, with additional penalties including wearing an electronic ankle bracelet for 15 years, a 10- year ban on employment, and completion of 120 hours of sexual violence prevention courses. On January 9, 2025, the South Korean Supreme Court rejected Jung Myung-seok's appeal, and the final judgment became effective .

Jung Myung-seok is currently serving his sentence in Daejeon. An official from the Daejeon District Court stated that Jung will serve his previous sentence and then continue to serve his current 33-year prison term. The judge also revealed that another member of the organization was sentenced to seven years in prison for assisting Jung in the aforementioned crimes.

The Providence Church, officially the Christian Gospel Mission (CGM) and also known as the Jesus Morning Star (JMS), is internationally referred to as "Providence." Founded in the early 1980s by Chung Myung-seok (1980 according to Asia Economy), the organization and its leaders have long been accused of serious crimes, including sexual assault, against female members.
